How Lingo7 works

The demo below is the live reader with a German book. Kannada would work the same way once it is added.

Reading Kannada: what to know

Spoken in: India (Karnataka)

The Kannada script is an abugida of 49 letters, rounded like its close relative Telugu; the two are often treated as regional variants of a single script. Each consonant carries a built-in a, and vowel signs attach to it. When consonants meet without a vowel between them, the second is written in a reduced form under the first (an ottakshara), so in ಕನ್ನಡ (Kannada) the double n is a ನ with a small ನ beneath it.

Written and spoken Kannada differ considerably. The written standard used in books, newspapers and official texts is fairly uniform across Karnataka, while spoken Kannada varies from region to region. A learner who reads mostly meets the written standard, and one who talks meets the local speech.

Kannada literature goes back more than a thousand years. Pampa, a 10th-century Jain poet, is honoured as its first poet, and Kannada writers have won eight Jnanpith Awards, India's oldest and highest literary award, more than any language but Hindi, starting with Kuvempu in 1967. For beginners, StoryWeaver, a free online library, has more than 1,500 illustrated Kannada stories sorted by reading level.

Frequently asked questions

When will Lingo7 add Kannada?

There is no date yet. We add the most requested languages first, and Kannada needs the work described on this page. Leave your email in the form and we will write to you once, when Kannada is ready.

Can I read Kannada books in Lingo7 now?

Not yet. Lingo7 has no Kannada dictionary, audio or shelf of books, so a Kannada book would not get the sentence-by-sentence translation and word lookups the app is built on. The 49 languages it does read are listed on the home page.

How does the vote work?

One vote per email address per language. The count on this page shows a number once at least 10 people have asked, and refreshes within a minute of a new vote. Your email is stored only to tell you when Kannada launches, and deleted whenever you ask at support@lingoseven.com.

What is an ottakshara?

A consonant written in a reduced form under another consonant, used when there is no vowel between them. In ಕನ್ನಡ the double n is written as ನ with a small ನ beneath it. Most consonants have such a subjoined form, and learning them is part of learning to read.

Is written Kannada different from spoken Kannada?

Yes. The written standard is fairly uniform across Karnataka, while spoken Kannada varies from region to region, so a newspaper reads more formally than everyday speech sounds.

Who are the major Kannada writers?

From Pampa in the 10th century to modern poets, novelists and playwrights such as Kuvempu, D. R. Bendre, Shivaram Karanth, U. R. Ananthamurthy and Girish Karnad, all Jnanpith winners. Kannada has eight Jnanpith Awards, second only to Hindi.
